HOW TO MAKE A 3D BOOK COVER

Hey geniuses. So you’re on eBay and you see an ebook… but it’s got a 3D cover... How?. If you’ve always wanted to do that, I’ll show you how. There are lots of ways to make a 3D book cover but I’ve found a photoshop action that can do this for you easily (thank you Spentoggle).

I’ll explain how to use this action step-by-step to help you generate a 3D book cover but first use the link below to download the photoshop action.

STEP 1
Find the photoshop action you have downloaded from the link above(it should have a .atn extension). Open photoshop, then Drag-And-Drop the file into photoshop. Then press “ALT – F9” to show the “Actions” window/palette in photoshop. Assumming the “Actions” window is showing, follow the steps in the image below.

STEP 2
You should have the image below after completing step 1.

This is the book cover in 2D. So you have to add the text and images you want now. So proceed to add your designs or customizations. Use the template below.

NOTE THIS: Don’t design outside the blue(or whatever you change the book cover to). After customizing, you should have a 2D cover similar to mine shown below, design and customize as much or as little as you want.

STEP 3
Go to the “Layers” palette. The designs or customizations you’ve added should be on different layers. Hold “Ctrl” and select all the layers you’ve added except the “Background” layer. Press “Ctrl   E” to merge the selected layers. Now double-click on the title of the merged layer to rename it, give it the name “Cover”. Now you should have only two layers, “Cover” and “Background”. Go to the actions palette and proceed as shown in the diagram below.

STEP 4
You should have a 3D book cover similar to mine shown below.

Pretty cool huh? Yep. But it still needs some finishing touches. Just needs a drop shadow. Use the settings below.

STEP 5
Finally, save the image below and open it in photoshop, it should be the same size as the canvas for the book. This is the background for the book cover… or you can make a background similar to it. So you should have 3 layers, one layer containing the book, one layer containing this image and the Background layer
